NUTRITION FOR HEALTHY AGING AND LONGEVITY

Nutrition is a fundamental section of fitness and development. Adequate nutrition is associated to prolonged infant, child and maternal health, improve immune systems, safe pregnancy and childbirth, decrease risk of non-communicable ailments (such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease), and longevity.

It is well known that healthy children learn faster and better. People with sufficient nutrition are greater productive and can create possibilities to regularly wreck the cycles of poverty and hunger.

Malnutrition, in each form, provides a large threat to human health as it doubles the burdens in today's world. There are a couple of sorts of malnutrition, together with undernutrition (wasting or stunting), inadequate dietary nutritional vitamins or minerals, overweight, obesity, and occurring diet-related noncommunicable diseases. 

However,  many nutrients have been identified as important for longevity and it include vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fatty acids, proteins, and other essential nutrients.

VITAMINS 

Both the fat and water soluble vitamins are essential for optimal health and longevity. Vitamin A, B, C, D, E, and K are all important for overall health and deficiencies in any of these can result in serious health problems. Vitamin A is important for healthy vision and skin, and it has been associated with reducing the risk of some types of cancer. Vitamin B is important for energy production and metabolism, and deficiencies can lead to a weakened immune system. Vitamin C helps the body absorb iron and is important for wound healing, and it has been associated with reducing the risk of some types of cancer. Vitamin D helps regulate calcium levels and is important for strong bones and teeth, and it has been associated with reducing the risk of some types of cancer. Vitamin E helps protect cells from damage and is important for healthy skin, and it has been associated with reducing the risk of some types of cancer. Vitamin K helps with blood clotting and is important for healthy bones and teeth, and it has been associated with reducing the risk of some types of cancer.

MINERALS

Minerals are also important aspect of nutrition and longevity. Calcium is important for strong bones and teeth, and it has been associated with reducing the risk of some types of cancer. Magnesium helps regulate nerve and muscle function, and it has been associated with reducing the risk of some types of cancer. Iron helps transport oxygen in the blood, and it has been associated with reducing the risk of some types of cancer. Potassium helps regulate water balance in the body. Zinc helps with healing wounds and is important for a healthy immune system.

ANTIOXIDANTS

Antioxidants are important for good health as well as longevity. Antioxidants help protect cells from free radical damage, and they have been associated with reducing the risk of some types of cancer when consume rightly. Vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E are all antioxidants, and they are important for protecting cells from damage. Other antioxidants include beta-carotene, lycopene, and polyphenols. All of these antioxidants can be found in foods such as herbs, vegetables, and some are used as supplement to our diet.

FATTY ACIDS

Fatty acids are also important for good health and longevity. Omega-3 fatty acids are important for reducing inflammation, and they have been associated with reducing the risk of some types of cancer, likewise, Omega-6 fatty acids help regulate blood sugar levels. Omega-9 fatty acids help with energy production.

PROTEIN

Protein plays an important role in human nutrition, right from conception to when a child is given birth and through growth and development. Proteins are important for building and repairing tissues, and they have been associated with reducing the risk of some types of cancer. It is important to consume a variety of proteins, including lean meats, fish, eggs, nuts, and legumes.

DIETARY FIBRE

Other essential nutrients are also important for good health and longevity. These include dietary fiber, which helps regulate digestion and reduce the risk of some types of cancer, and phytochemicals, which help protect cells from damage.

Lastly, nutrition is essential for good health and longevity. Eating a balanced diet that includes a variety of these nutrients can help promote a healthy lifestyle and it is important to be mindful of the processing techniques (cooking, chopping, mixing and others) to ensure all nutrients are not lost during the process. Also, a balanced, nutrient-rich diet can support physical and mental health, and reduce the risk of age-related diseases. It is never too late to start making positive changes to your diet, and even small adjustments can have a big impact on your health.
